Literacy KC’s mission is to advance literacy among Kansas City area adults through direct service, advocacy, and collaboration. Our vision is “literacy for all.” Literacy KC offers adults and families a welcoming community to develop literacy skills and enhance quality of life.
We take a community literacy approach to teaching adult students. Through an innovative social learning model, lead instructors are supported by a team of tutors in each dynamic classroom setting. We are looking for a part-time teacher available 15-20 hours/week to teach mornings and evenings, twice a week and with a flexible schedule that will accommodate occasional evening and weekend meetings.
The English Language Learner program is an opportunity for each student to access comprehensive literacy education from an instructor-led and volunteer tutor-driven team. The English Language Learner Instructor will provide basic, relevant literacy instruction through use of software, classroom, and individualized learning. The instructor will oversee both student progress, as well as a team of volunteer tutors who will act as teacher’s aids in providing a well-rounded literacy curriculum. The instructor will help develop, implement, and evaluate research-driven literacy strategies. The goal of instruction will be to support individual adult English language learning students in making continuous improvements in their reading, writing, language, speaking, listening, and thinking skills across the disciplines. Progress will be measured in multiple assessments, including diagnostic reading assessments.
